PROFILE OF THE INSTITUTE
Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, a pioneering Technical Institution occupying a unique position in the field of technical education in our country, is the outcome of the brilliant vision, farsightedness and philanthropy of our illustrious founder Thiru. V. Seshasayee who was a veteran industrialist and architect of various industrial ventures. He realized the need for more engineers and technicians for rapid industrialization of our country and started this Technical Institution in the year 1952 with the purse presented to him by his friends and well-wishers on the occasion of his 61st birthday. This technical institution was formally declared open on 28th January 1952. It made a humble beginning by conducting A.M.I.E classes. Many Arts and Science Graduates availed this opportunity to become engineers.
The State and the Central Government have since recognized this institution and this became a full-fledged aided polytechnic in 1955 with an annual intake of 100 students under the policy of Central and State Governments to produce more technicians to meet the requirements of industries. In 1958, the intake was increased to 120 and in 1961 it was further increased to 180 as both Central and State Governments were impressed with the functioning of this institution. The intake has been increased by 60 with the starting of Diploma programmes in Computer Engineering, Paper Technology - a unique Diploma programme offered only by this institution in the whole of Tamil Nadu, Instrumentation and Control Engineering was started under World Bank Aided Second Technician Education Project and Electronics and Communication Engineering under self - supporting Scheme. The sanctioned intake is now 500. The seed sown by our illustrious Founder has grown by leaps and bounds into a prestigious institution which has carved a niche for itself among technical institutions in the country.
CAMPUS
The polytechnic is situated, on Trichy-Thanjavur main road of 8 kms from the Tiruchirappalli junction. The Campus covers an area of 5.13 hectares and hostel 3.55 hectares. The basic infrastructure includes a main building, an auditorium, six laboratory buildings, four workshop buildings, five full fledged computer centers, a CAD/CAM laboratory, a well-equipped library and a hostel for boys. The hostel has 40 rooms, a mini library and two recreation halls. The hostel kitchen has steam cooking facilities for preparation of food under hygienic condition.
MANDATE
Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, a Government Aided Polytechnic College administered by a Governing Council, offers full time Diploma, Post Diploma and Sandwich Programmes in various engineering disciplines to post secondary men and women candidates admitted to the Polytechnic through selection process prescribed by the Directorate of Technical Education. Following an autonomously developed curriculum and syllabus, specific modes of delivery and evaluation process and utilizing the services of experts and other resources, human and material, the Polytechnic imparts technical education to the students to equip them adequately for gainful employment.
MISSION
Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli is an AICTE approved, Government aided, Autonomous, Co-educational Technical Institution run by a registered Society comprising of philanthropists under the name and style of "Seshasayee Educational Society" with a view to uplift the technological status of all the vital stakeholders in this central region of Tamil Nadu through various 3-year Diploma Programmes at post-secondary level and a variety of non-formal Continuing Education Programmes.
