HISTORY OF INSTITUTION
GENESIS
SeshasayeeInstututeof Technology, Tiruchirappalli, is the first Grant- in Aid Polytechnicto beestablished in Tamilnadu in the post independent era. This pioneeringTechnicalInstitution occupying a unique position in the field of technicaleducation inour country, is the outcome of the farsightedness and philanthropyof ourillustrious founder (Late) Thiru. V.Seshasayee. Being a suceefulindustrialist,he realized the need for more engineers and technicians forindustrialization ofour country.
His friends and well- wishers felicitatedhim and presented him a purse on theoccasion of his 61st birthday in1952. He graciously donated theentire amount for starting this Technical inthe year 1952. This institute made ahumble beginning by conducting A.M.I.E.Classses. Many Arts andScience Graduates become engineers after passingsections A & B of A.M.I.E.
GROWTH
Thisinstitutionbecame a full fledged aidedPolyechnic in 1954 with an annual intake of100 students under the policy ofCentral and State Governments to produce moretechnicians to meet the requirementsof industries. In 1958 the intake was isincreased to 120 and in 1961 it wasfurther increased to 180 as both Central andState Governments were impressedwith the functioning of thisInstitution. The intake was increasedto 210 withthe starting of Diploma programme in pulp and paper Technologyduring 1984, a unique Sanwich Diploma programme offered only by thisinstitution in whole of Tamilnadu and Diploma in Computer Engineering in theyear 1989 with an intake of 30. Instrumentation Technology under World BankAided Second TechnicianEducation was indrouced in 1995 with the sanctionedintake of 30. Illustrious founder has grown by leaps and bounds. Into a prestigious institution, which hascarved for itself a niche amongtechnical institution in the country. As of2016-17 academic sission admissioncapacity is more than 1000 students. Being a Co-education institution wehave on rollabout 300 girl students.
AUTONOMOUS STATUS
Theprestigious institutionbecameAutonomous and Co- educational from the academic year 1994-95 under WorldBankAssited Second Technician Education Project. It has its own Academic BoardandAwards Committee to guide the academic activities. The autonomy providesflexibilityto the institution to frame its own curriculam in tune with rapidlychangingtechnology and industrial requirement.

SIT is inTiruchirapalli (also know as Trichy or Tiruchy). It is located about 12.3 kmfrom Tiruchurappalli Jn / Central Bus stand on the Trichy-Thanjavur Highway.Thesimplest and most economical way to reach SIT is by bus. Any city Bus at theTiruchirapalli Jn will take you to the central bus stand. Board Thanjavur boundmofussil or route bus. The journey time from Trichy will be around 23 minutes.Taxis may charge around Rs.150/-
