HISTORY OF INSTITUTION
GENESIS
Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, is thefirst Grant- in Aid Polytechnic to be established in Tamilnadu in the postindependent era. This pioneering Technical Institution occupying a uniqueposition in the field of technical education in our country is the outcome ofthe farsighted nets and philanthropy of our illustrious founder (Late) Thiru.V.Seshasayee. Being a successful industrialist, he realized the need for moreengineers and technicians for industrialization of our country.
His friends andwell- wishers felicitated him and presented him a purse on the occasion of his61st birthday in1952. He graciously donated the entire amountfor starting this Technical in the year 1952. This institute made a humble beginning by conducting A.M.I.E. Classses. Many Arts and Science Graduatesbecome engineers after passing sections A & B of A.M.I.E.
GROWTH
This institution became a fully fledged aided Polytechnic in 1954 with an annual intake of 100 studentsunder the policy of Central and State Governments to produce more techniciansto meet the requirements of industries. In 1958 the intake was is increased to120 and in 1961 it was further increased to 180 as both Central and StateGovernments were impressed with the functioning of thisInstitution. The intake was increasedto 210 with the starting of Diploma programme in pulp and paper Technologyduring 1984, a unique Sandwich Diploma programme offered only by this institutionin whole of Tamilnadu and Diploma in Computer Engineering in the year 1989 withan intake of 30. Instrumentation Technology under World Bank Aided SecondTechnician Education was introduced in 1995 with the sanctioned intake of 30.Illustrious founder has grown by leap sand bounds. Into aprestigious institution, which has carved for itself a niche among technicalinstitution in the country? As of 2016-17academic session admission capacity ismore than 1000 students. Being a Co-education institution we have on rollabout 300 girl students.
AUTONOMOUS STATUS
The prestigious institutionbecame Autonomous and Co- educational from the academic year 1994-95 under WorldBank Assisted Second Technician Education Project. It has its own Academic Boardand Awards Committee to guide the academic activities. The autonomy providesflexibility to the institution to frame its own curriculum in tune with rapidlychanging technology and industrial requirement.
